Monastery of San Martino in Naples

The Monastery of San Martino is one of Naples' greatest monumental complexes. It represents, without doubt, one of the most successful examples of Baroque architecture and art along with the Royal Chapel of the Treasury of San Gennaro. It is located on the hill of Vomero, next to Castel Sant'Elmo.
Since 1866, the Monastery hosts the National Museum of San Martino, where various works have been preserved, ranging from the Naples from the Bourbon era to the post unit period, including, for example, numerous works by artists such as José de Ribera, Luca Giordano, Francesco De Mura and Battistello Caracciolo. In addition, there are important paintings dating back to the Risorgimento period of Naples and paintings from the Posillipo School. An interesting part is the section with the porcelains of Capodimonte and the “presepi” art. Finally yet importantly, there are several sculptures by Pietro Bernini, such as the Madonna with the Child and San Giovannino, and a painting, recently purchased by the Italian State, of historical significance regarding the urban development of the city: “La Tavolozza Strozzi”.
